Fun stuff
Pasteles are a special treat because it takes a lot of time to prepare them. That’s why Evie’s family only makes them once a year around Christmas time!
To help the time go by, Evie likes to color and play games with her cousins. Here are some of her favorite things to try when waiting feels hard to do!
Let’s play a waiting game!
One of Evie’s favorite games is, “We’re going to Kentucky”
HERE’S HOW YOU PLAY:
Start by getting everyone in a circle and asking one person to stand in the middle. While you hold hands and sing, the person in the middle has to do everything the song says, until the very end of the song when they STOP and point at someone in the circle. That person goes into the circle next and the game starts over. Sing faster each time until everyone gets a turn! Listen to the melody below!
LISTEN TO THE MELODY:
SING THE SONG:
We’re going to Kentucky
We’re going to the fair
To see the señorita
With flowers in her hair
Shake it shake it shake it
Shake it all you can
Shake it like a milkshake
And do the best you can
OH, rumble to the bottom
Rumble to the top
And spin around and spin around
Until it’s time to STOP!

There are three traditional island instruments in Evie’s home: the güiro, a cuatro and maracas. Discover these instruments below:
A cuatro is a guitar-like instrument that is unique to Puerto Rico.
A güiro is a hollowed-out gourd (similar to a squash) that makes music by rubbing a stick or tine scraper on the outside ridges.
Maracas are shakers that are played in pairs by shaking the handles.
